Import to Burundi

The main sector of Burundi's economy is agriculture, which comprises 54 percent of the country's GDP. The remaining part is involved in Burundi's major industries: food processing, manufacture of essential consumer goods and assembly of imported components.

Trade occupied 50.9% of Burundi’s GDP in the period between 2006-2008, as reported by the World Trade Organization. In this context, it is worth mentioning that Burundi is the 191st largest export economy in the world and the 195th largest importer. Also, Burundi's GDP growth is expected to rise from 4,7 to 5 percent in 2016 as a result of the implemented projects in the mining and energy domains.

At present Burundi isn't self-sufficient in food-production, which lead to an increase of imports. Most imported goods come from EU, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, China, India, Kenya, Uganda, which are Burundi's main trading partners.

The Republic of Burundi is situated in East Africa. It is a landlocked country bordered by Tanzania, Congo and Rwanda. Burundi's capital and largest city is Bujumbura. The country is a member of the East African Community and World Trade Organization.

Tariffs

Being a member of EAC, Burundi shares the same customs tariffs and trade regulations applied by this organization. Burundi applies the EAC common external tariffs on the cost, insurance and freight (c.i.f.) value of imports.

Additional taxes

Burundi has an 18-percent VAT applied on the cost, insurance and freight value plus duty, for the vast majority of products.

Product certification, labelling and packaging

To import goods in Burundi a Certificate of Conformity is needed. It is a document issued to prove the conformity of the products to the relevant approved standards, and for customs clearance.  Importers who do not have a CoC may be issued a penalty of 15% of CIF. The Certificate of Conformity is issued by the appointed government agency responsible for ensuring product quality standards (Burundi Bureau of Standards and Quality Control). The BBN may not allow some goods to be imported into Burundi if they have been rejected by the other EAC members.

Burundi applies international standards on labelling and packaging and does not have any specific requirements on this point.
