Jordan is an Arab kingdom situated in Western Asia, on the East Bank of the Jordan River. The country is bordered Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Palestine, the Dead Sea  and the Red Sea. Jordan is a member of the Arab Sea Ports Federation, Council of Arab Economic Unity, General Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture for Arab Countries, International Chamber of Commerce, International Trade Union Confederation and World Trade Organization. The country is strategically located at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe.

 

Tariffs

Imported products are subject to customs tariffs which vary from 0% to 30%, applied on the CIF value of products. Products such as tobacco and alcohol are subject to a higher tax of 50-180%. Some goods are subject to additional taxes of 14-16% for electrical appliances and 10-50% for passenger cars.

In Jordan, the import of alcohol and pork is not restricted, but are subject to high tariffs.  

There are preferential tariff duties for imported goods originating in countries which have special trade agreements with Jordan. 

 

Product certification, labelling and packaging

The Jordanian Institute of Standards and Metrology is responsible for setting labelling requirements. In general, labelling requirements follow the WTO rules and vary from one product to another. 

When importing goods into Jordan, labels must be in Arabic or have a stick-on label in Arabic. The label has to contain the name of the product, the manufacturer’s name and address, net weight, lot number and “use before” date. Local labelling requirements do not include Recommended Daily Intake (RDIs).

All shipments to Jordan must be accompanied by a certified commercial invoice showing the origin of the product or a certificate of origin as a separate document. Food products need sanitary and phyto- sanitary certificates and animal products need a veterinary animal health certificate.

Some products such as arms and ammunitions, decoders and satellite receivers, medical drugs and antibiotics, military clothing, potatoes, onions, garlic, fresh fruit and vegetables, radioactive materials and uranium require pre-import clearance, once obtained it acts as an import license.

 

Documents for import and export

Commercial invoice (original commercial invoice with value, weight and other relevant details in it; the information of the invoice must be translated into Arabic)

Bill of lading/airway bill (every customs declaration must include maritime or airway bill of lading)

Certificate of origin (the original commercial invoice and certificate of origin must be attested by the local Chamber of Commerce in the country of origin and should be notarised by the Jordanian Diplomatic mission in the country of origin).
