Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world. It is the dominant nation of Central Asia in terms of economy, generating 60% of the region's GDP. Kazakhstan is bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The country is a member of the United Nations, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, North Atlantic Cooperation Council, Commonwealth of Independent States. Kazakhstan established a customs union with Russia and Belarus, known as the Eurasian Economic Union.
Tariffs
Import taxes are applied on most goods imported into Kazakhstan from non-Customs Union countries.
Imported goods originating from countries with which Kazakhstan has special customs unions benefit from preferential tariffs or are fully or partially exempt from customs duties.
The average tariff constitutes 9%. Customs duties on food products vary from 0-80%, on other goods from 0-20%.
To sum up, while importing into Kazakhstan, importers will have to pay:
- a VAT of 12%
- customs duties, which vary from 0 -25% depending on the classification of the imported goods
- excise duties, for goods such as alcohol
Product certification, labelling and packaging
Goods such as carpets, textile floor coverings, knit clothing and textile clothing require labels in both the Kazakh and Russian languages.
Products should be securely packed, taking into account the nature of the goods, ways of transport and climatic conditions.
A wide range of products require a certificate of conformity, which can be mandatory or voluntary, depending on the type of the imported goods.

- package materials
- electrical and telecommunications equipment
- transportation equipment and tools
- pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, perfumes
- arms
- gold and silver jewellery
- construction materials and wood

- certificate of conformity
- invoices,
- certificate of origin
- necessary licenses and permits
