Kemi Badenoch, minister of international trade, has urged the British government to invest in cutting-edge green technologies to prepare its economy for the future.

Badenoch said in a speech at a green trade and investment expo in Gateshead that technologies to combat climate change would lead to well-paying jobs and help provide energy security in the future.

According to the Northern Echo, the event was hosted as part of International Trade Week by the Department for International Trade (DIT) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

As part of its intervention, the DIT has released figures relating to net zero related investment projects, which show that in the past two years, these have brought £19,8 billion of capital expenditure to the UK as a result of these projects.

To rebuild the economy in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has set its sights on a 'green industrial revolution' as a way to recreate the economy, with former prime minister Boris Johnson announcing a '10 point plan to create up to 250,000 new jobs across the country.
