Characteristics of the plant Tribulus terrestris L.
Tribulus terrestris L. is a herbaceous perennial plant from the Zigophyllaceae family, with a lot of branching, forming flat patches long stems, common in stony places in the warm parts of the country. The researches about the main active substances in the plant – saponins, had been made in Bulgaria. Steroid saponins from furostanol and spirostanol types and sapogenins have been isolated. In the saponins mix, predominate the furostanol saponins protodioscin and protogracilin.
Flavonol glycosides like astragalin, tribuloside, rutin, tannic compounds and oils are also found. For Tribulus terrestris plant extract production we use the whole areal part of the plant (herba), harvested in the flowering period.
Tribulus terrestris grows well in moderate and tropical climates and the plant is most commonly found in wild, dry and stony habitats. That is why it thrives in the warmer regions of Bulgaria and here it accumulates a specific bouquet of biologically active substances that are not present in Tribulus growing elsewhere in the world.
