The Dominican Republic is known to have rare blue colored amber.

There are five classes of amber, defined on the basis of their chemical constituents. Because it originates as a soft, sticky tree resin, amber sometimes contains animal and plant material as inclusions. Amber occurring in coal seams is also called resinite, and the term ambrite is applied to that found specifically within New Zealand coal seams. Most amber stone is a warm golden yellow color, but the colors can vary between shades of yellow, orange, red, white, brown, green and a bluish almost black color. Uncommon colors include red amber (sometimes known as "cherry amber"), green amber, and even blue amber, which is rare and highly sought after. Amber clarity ranges from transparent to opaque and it has a resinous luster. Most amber specimens have pockets of air bubbles and various other inclusions. Pyrite impurities can sometimes give amber a bluish color. Many amber varieties have a very cloudy clarity caused by numerous minute bubbles; these stones are known as 'bony amber'. The Dominican Republic uses the Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) for commodity classification, the basic import tax ranging from 0% to 40%. With the exception of pharmaceutical products (including cosmetics, skin care products and drugs), most products do not require specific import licences. The Ministry of Health issues import licences for pharmaceutical products, which are valid for a period of five years.

The export/import documentation should be in Spanish or accompanied by a Spanish translation, and should include the following:

  • transportation document (air waybill or bill of lading)
  • commercial invoice
  • packing list
  • insurance certificate
  • certificate of origin (for some products)

Imports into free trade zones do not require import licences or customs duties.
