International Standards

General Standards

Tunisia is one of the most politically stable countries in Africa and the Middle East. The country also has the most diversified economy in the region and one of the highest standards of living in Africa.

Regarding trade standards, it should be mentioned that not all Tunisian products are standardized. However, Tunisian consumers are gradually becoming aware of the international standards. At present, the country is following ISO 9001 standards. Many companies from the industrial sector have already achieved ISO 9001 certification.

Standards organizations

The Institut National de la Normalisation et de la Propriété Industrielle (INNORPI) is a non-administrative public institution, under the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Small and Medium-sized enterprises. INNORPI is responsible for standardization, product and quality systems certification, quality promotion and protection of industrial property.

Conformity Assessment

INNORPI is the main standardization body of Tunisia and the conformity assessment is included in its responsibilities. The agency is also in charge of the creation of norms and standards related to certification and information, development of technical norms, certification and management of national trademarks.

Product Certification

INNORPI is the primary certification body of Tunisia. Certification is voluntary, except for some products which are subject to a mandatory certification scheme. The first step in the certification procedure is to obtain a certification application. The procedure consists in assessing the conformity of the product with the requirements of the appropriate standards or technical specifications.

Packaging of imported goods must contain a label in Arabic and indicate the following details:

- Name of the importing company

- Contact of the importing company

- Contact of the exporting company

- Date of validity and expiration of the product

- Ingredients of the product

Other languages permitted for packaging and labeling include French and English. The use of the metric system is obligatory. Labels also must include the mark of origin "Made In".

INNORPI is responsible for accreditation.
